I was struck by your first paragraph. I am a mother of a student who undertook an Erasmus year in France last year, and had the same 'coming home' experience as you.

Surely the best way to deal with this type of incident is to improve communication from the authorities to students, rather than begin a knee-jerk reaction of installing CCTV etc. Basic keep-yourself-safe procedures should be revised, like not walking alone at night. Let's hope that this was just an isolated incident, although I wonder how long Hav more…

I like Helsinki. I only went once a long time ago, but it had a nice feel. Wales is similarly enthusiastic about flags and that's a good thing: national unity is a positive thing, I think, as long as it doesn't become jingoistic. No-one is ashamed to be Welsh - perhaps that shame you speak of is an English thing!
